Most people know that if you mix bicarb of soda (good old fashioned baking powder) with vinegar you get a fizzy sort of explosion. Take that explosion and contain it in a bottle and what you get is a rocket!
What Happens When You Mix Bicarb of Soda and Vinegar?
Bicarb is an alkali (or base) and vinegar contains a weak acid. All of the fizzing when you mix the two is actually two separate chemical reactions: the first is an acid-base reaction in which a salt (sodium acetate) and another acid (carbonic acid) are formed. Now, carbonic acid sounds a bit face-meltingly scary, but don't worry it's a very weak acid and as for sodium acetate, that is also harmless and is sometimes used as a food additive! Those two compounds immediately break down further into water and carbon dioxide gas which is where the fizz power comes from!
The Fizz Rocket kit contains a rocket and base as well as a measuring scoop. All you need to do is carefully add the ingredients, fit the rocket onto the base and watch it blast off up to 5 metres high! We recommend that you do this outside for obvious reasons!
This kit is intended for anyone age 14+ (younger kids will require supervision) and will make any science nerd happy for hours on end so order one today for an educational experience at Christmas or for a birthday.
